Areas of Focus

Andrea Lewis Hartung is an Appellate Attorney in the Supreme Court and Appellate Program of the MacArthur Justice Center. In this role, she challenges excessive criminal sentences based on state constitutional law. Her work is primarily in state appellate courts, where she sees the greatest potential for mitigating unduly harsh punishment.

Prior to joining the MacArthur Justice Center, Andrea worked as a Clinical Associate Professor of Law at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law. As a staff attorney in the clinic’s Center on Wrongful Convictions, Andrea’s practice focused on post-conviction relief, securing exoneration or sentence reductions in state and federal court for individuals who were convicted of crimes they did not commit. Andrea also directed the Center’s Women’s Defense Initiative, seeking new sentencing hearings or clemency commutations for women and non-binary people serving excessive sentences given without consideration of gender-focused mitigating factors.

At Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, Andrea taught clinical courses on criminal post-conviction defense litigation and wrongful convictions. Andrea has written and presented across the country on gender, sentencing, and wrongful convictions.

Andrea is a graduate of Northwestern University School of Law. After graduating law school, she worked as an associate at the law firm Vedder Price P.C. Chicago, Illinois, and as a Clinical Fellow at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law.
