More than 40 states currently suspend driver’s licenses over unpaid legal fees.
The result is a never-ending, devastating cycle. A person can’t afford to pay a parking ticket or court fee, so she loses her license. Because many communities offer no real public transportation, not being allowed to drive means not being able to get to a job, which can mean financial ruin. If, in desperation, a person decides to keep driving on a suspended license, she risks arrest and further indebtedness to the legal system.
We joined with the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) to put an end to this practice in Mississippi.
