Alongside ArchCity Defenders, Saint Louis University School of Law Legal Clinics, and Rights Behind Bars, we filed a lawsuit on behalf of Anthony Tillman, a paraplegic man in the St. Louis City Justice Center, alleging that the City has violated his rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act by failing to provide him access to a shower that accommodates his disability.
During Mr. Tillman‘s months behind bars, the City has denied him access to a wheelchair-accessible shower and instead provided him with a washbasin and a rag.
In March 2021, a federal judge ordered the City of St. Louis to immediately provide an accessible shower to Anthony Tillman, a paraplegic man who has been fighting for the opportunity to take a shower for over 160 days since being detained at the St. Louis City Justice Center.
“I just want to be treated fair, like how everyone else is supposed to be treated. I am disabled and I want to be accommodated. I’m speaking out and telling my story because if someone else who is paraplegic finds themself in the same situation, they should not have to experience what I’ve experienced."
